While I draw on multiple therapy traditions, most of my therapy work has an interpersonal, psychodynamic sensibility. Often, our difficulties are perpetuated by relational patterns that we find ourselves in, consciously or unconsciously. Change can begin in therapy when the therapist and client can start to notice these patterns together, both in the person’s life and the relationship with the therapist that emerges in the room.
Skills and coping strategies are important too, of course, and often these are key in the early stages of therapy to help you get back on your feet. I am trained in and experienced in using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approaches, including its offshoots of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT).
In any case, therapy is adapted to each individual, and is guided by your goals. Regardless of which evidence-based modality is used, research suggests that the therapeutic relationship - i.e., a good working relationship, a shared goal, and a shared agreement of how we will move towards that goal - is the most important factor in therapy success.
